6 key lessons I teach my clients

As a business coach and consultant, you can imagine that I am bombarded by emails, private messages and phone calls everyday asking about the ins and outs of business. And while no 2 businesses are alike or even have the same goals or strategies, there are a few keys discussions I have with every client that engages my services. Because it is important that they understand that with a fundamental understanding of these topics, they may very well struggle to attract clients and grow their business. Each one of the elements need to be taken into consideration to grow your business. So let me share with you what we usually discuss in our sessions:

  1. Mindset

If your mind is in a mess then you are not going to succeed. Have I made myself clear? I know this is hard for many people to grapple because they just want to jump into strategy and marketing and all the nice things to make money.

But if you want to make money you have to start fixing your mindset. What you think about yourself, your business and your environment. Not just being positive…even though that helps, but believing that you are a powerful force to be reckoned with and that nothing can stop you from achieving success in this life.

You have to believe it, say it, walk in it, sing it out loud, write it out, preach it, sit down in it, stand in it and make it your daily reality!

You cannot have a busted tyre when you are driving a Mercedez Benz. Nope! You have to make sure your tyres always have air and are road worthy. Make yourself success worthy every single day

2. Branding

How many times have you heard that your brand is YOU! And yes I hear all the complaints about not wanting to be the face and blah blah blah but whether you are the face of the brand or not your brand is a reflection of your personality.

Each brand has a unique personality which resonates with the audience they are trying to attract. Think about your own personality traits and see if they tie into your brand

  • Are you warm and soft
  • Are you louder and outspoken
  • Are your colourful or more subdued
  • Do you like adventure or like the indoors

How does your own personality tie into your brand and what you present to your clients? Check out this blog I did recently really explaining how to build your brand- Are you your brand?

3. Marketing

Marketing is a combination of activities that you do together in order to attract the clients that you want. It is not one task that is done in isolation but a combination which work together to get you the results that you want.

When somebody says they struggle with marketing more than likely they are posting on 2 social media platforms and that is all. That is a big no no. Think about all the marketing tools available at your disposal like

  1. Video
  2. Email
  3. Blogging/articles
  4. Posters/Fliers
  5. Interviews
  6. Networking events

Combining a few of these things together will ensure that you build know-like and trust and you are seen and heard by your audience and so close the sale!

I even spoke about this topic at length in a blog last year called M is for Marketing

4. Sales Strategies

Selling is simply having a conversation with your clients about their challenge and how you can solve their challenge. But there may be a few reasons that you are not selling enough or even at all….

  1. If you do not love what you are selling. And I mean if you are not obsessed and totally feel aligned to it then it shows in your sales process
  2. If you are not asking for the sale often. If you only ask people to buy from you on a Monday but not any other day then your sales will dwindle and I mean literally tell them come buy from me after you give them a heap load of value.
  3. If your prices are not in alignment with your audience. Prices are not pulled from the top of your head…no. Prices are derived based on many factors one of which includes how much the market can manage. Do your research and price accordingly but DO NOT UNDERPRICE AND HOPE TO GET SALES!!!!
  4. You are selling to the wrong people. If you are trying to sell bananas to people who love apples then you are wasting precious time and resources. Sell to those who love what you are offering and they will buy from you over and over and over again and then refer you to another banana lover.

The truth is that in order for you to make consistent sales you have to stay connected no matter what, I explained exactly how in Stay Connected to get more sales

5. Online Strategies

What online platforms are you on? Do you know that even though facebook may be the most popular it is not the only platform that you should be connecting with your audience. This is a common mistake. Build a facebook page and they will come……ammmm nope!

In fact, for you to really see your business grow you need to have an online strategy for your business and not just wing it. Your strategy will include

  1. A consistent look and feel. Are you using different colours and font and there is no cohesion to your look? Then you are confusing your audience
  2. Is your message on point? Are you speaking directly to your audience about the things that they want to hear about or are you jumping from a motivation piece to pictures of a cat, to a happy birthday announcement? What is the ultimate message that you want to share? Share that consistently
  3. Are you consistent or only showing up on Thursday night at 8pm. No you do not need to show up every hour on the hour to be a force online but you need to show up consistently enough that your audience gets to see and learn from you and ultimately buy from you.
  4. Finally, it is not about you, it is about them! Hard pill to swallow yes but it means be social and engage with your audience and talk to them often. Show them how much you care and love them and they will reward you by buying from you.

What strategy are you using for your online presence?

6. Team work/ Building a team

I am a big believer in team work. I know I would not have come this far if I did not have a team. Not even a huge team but a team of dedicated people who keep me accountable, who share tools and resources and help keep me on the right track. Everybody deserves to have a team because we do not need to build our business alone.

Those days are over! Because there is enough in the Universe for all of us to be millionaires and to be powerful if we would just put down our barriers and believe in others as well. Not everybody is trying to steal your dream…in fact nobody can do that. But there is abundance in this universe and as a team we can definitely all succeed.

There you have it folks. 6 key lessons I teach my clients. Does it make sense? And if you want to know how my clients tend to access me 24 hours a day for even more business advice then join me in my private facebook group of over 3000 entrepreneurs from around the world. Who do I collaborate with?

Collaborations are all the rave now. Why? Because we are realizing more and more that you do not have to grow your business alone. According to the Business Dictionary, a collaboration is ‘Cooperative arrangement in which two or more parties (which may or may not have any previous relationship) work jointly towards a common goal.’

There are millions of people who want to buy from you  and a great way to get in front of them is to collaborate with somebody who has the same ideal client but is offering a complimentary service. Examples include hairdressers and nail techs, bakers and event planners to name just a few, but many times it does not work out as we expected. There is a reason we are getting collaborations wrong and I want to walk you through how to make it work

1. When you are not clear about what the collaborations looks like

This is the most common mistake. Time and time again I see entrepreneurs announce that they want to collaborate with other business owners but they are not clear about how the collaboration will look or feel. They do not have a clear understanding of who will be doing the work and the expected outcome.

There is the belief that once the next entrepreneur has clients and is offering a complimentary service then they are the best persons to collaborate with. The truth is, if you are looking for someone to collaborate with, you need to do your homework. Some questions to consider are

  • who are their ideal clients
  • how successful and busy are their own businesses
  • have they collaborated with anybody before
  • how visible are they
  • do their vision, mission and ethics in alignment with your business

Because so many entrepreneurs do not think about these questions they end up in disastrous collaborations and loose a ton of money, time and resources in the process.

2. You have no contract

One of the biggest mis-steps entrepreneurs make when going into any collaborative agreement. Even if it is a one page contract which identifies

  • what is the overall goal of the collaboration
  • each persons role in the collaboration,
  • how money will be spent and distributed,
  • how long the collaboration will be engaged,
  • how the success of the collaboration will be measured and
  • how will the collaboration be promoted!

Having no contract leaves your collaboration open to failure because expectations are not clearly defined.

3. Lack of communication

This is when the collaboration is finalised. Entrepreneurs tend to just walk away and expect things to fall into place. But actually this is when you have to keep in contact with your collaborator because as you start to promote the collaboration, things may have to be tweaked, twisted and turned to make sure you are really hitting your targets. It is not a drop it and they will come scenario. Keep lines of communication open throughout the life of the collaboration and decide what day and time of the week you will be checking in to give updates etc.

Collaborations are a great way to grow your business fast but like with anything else in business, it must be done with a strategic plan in mind and not willy nilly.

Do you have any successful collaboration stories? Or do you want help in deciding how to find someone to collaborate with? Post your comments below and let’s keep this conversation going!

Why you should hire a coach

Coaching seems to be ‘in’ thing now. Everywhere you turn somebody is calling themselves a coach. Whether this is good or bad is up for debate but what is most important is why you should hire a coach. Let’s start off by distinguishing what a coach is and is not. A coach is a qualified person who guides you through a process to help you reach to an end goal. Whether it is personal or business, your coach should help you go through a process of analysis for you to get clarity on where you want to be and how you plan to get there and then work with you as you move closer to your end goal.

A coach is not a psychologist or a therapist and does not treat with personal or mental health issues and should in fact recommend you seek professional help if these are your underlying issues. Your coach also does not focus on your past but instead stares you forward into the future and gets you into action to get what you desire. A good coach will help you unleash the great potential that is lying asleep inside of you so that you can become a better version of yourself. Your coach does not and should not have all the answers but is there to ask you some hard burning and sometimes tough questions to allow you to seek out the answers and get the transformation that you are craving. Your coach should be your cheerleader and team support but should also know when to give you a solid shake up or wake up call when you are falling down a slippery slope.

Not all coaches are made equal and some of the best coaches have coaches because they understand the importance of continuous growth and transformation.

Why should you hire a coach?

Because if you are serious about building a business that you truly love, you know and understand that it cannot be done alone. You know that you need a team and support system so you can work smarter not harder and that having this team will allow you to grow even faster than if you were doing it alone.

I can attest to the fact that I have grown  my own coaching business so rapidly because I have had many coaches and mentors to guide me along the way. They have been able to share valuable information which allowed me to avoid many of the traps of entrepreneurship. My own coach helped me find my rhythm and my momentum and it is because of this support I am where I am today. But more than that, I also understand that the coaching relationship would not have worked if I did not put in the work we discussed or get uncomfortable until I got comfortable with all that I needed to do to become a successful coach in my niche. I spoke about this in one of my blogs in July 2016- How hiring a coach changed my life.

In your quest to find a coach, look for someone who resonates with your own value system. Someone who has experienced and surpassed where you are presently and someone who has proof that they have accomplished what they say they are trying to help you achieve. A true coach will be honest, open and authentic and will be in a constant state of learning right along with you. (Just maybe I am the right fit for you!)

You should hire a coach because the world of business is competitive and having someone in your corner who has already accomplished what you are now trying to achieve will help you avoid many pitfalls. A coach is not a friend or a ‘yes’ man but is a no none sense supporter who will show up and give you the low down when you most need it. Your coach is not an advisor but your like your sub conscious brain helping you to  uncover all the innate skills and talents you already have.

How hiring a coach changed my life

I have had many mentors in my life and people who have helped me achieve what I dreamed of in my personal and business life. That added support, shoulder to cry on, ear to vent to and general cheerleader made a big difference in my life.

When I shifted my own Marketing business into becoming a full time coach, the first thing I did was hire a coach for a number of reasons.

  1. I wanted to understand the process and the best way was to immerse myself into a coaching programme myself
  2. I wanted guidance and support
  3. I wanted somebody who would not take no for an answer

Just this week, members of my facebook group- Dynamic Business Strategist– asked me if I had my own coach and I confirmed that I did, because I believe that being the best coach means that I also need to be coached. No one can build a business on their own and because sometimes we are so close to and tied into our business we miss some major loop holes which my coach can identify for me.

My coach is not just my personal cheerleader but she understands my goals and the work that I need to put in to get their because she has already walked this path. She has experience on her side and because of that I am able to avoid many mistakes if I was going this journey alone. My coach does not cuddle my feelings…which many people feel a coach should do…instead she calls me out on my laziness and procrastination and pushes me beyond my own comfort zone.

My coach allows me to dig within myself and develop solutions to problems I thought were insurmountable because she believe and she understands that I know exactly what I want and she won’t allow me to allow my fears to keep me back from my own success. She is in invested in my success because mine are hers. She is not here to cuddle me when I get in my feelings but remind me of the big picture and WHY I need to get up, show up and be accountable for my actions.

My coach has changed my life for the better because without her I would not have made as much progress as I have so far in the short nine months that I have been doing this full time. She stretches my imagination and asks me the tough questions so I can see that there is so much more of myself to be uncovered and revealed to the world. Without a coach, I would still be struggling, trying to figure out exactly where I want to be and who I want to be. Do not get me wrong, I eventually would have figured it all out but trust me when I say, it would have taken me so much longer to get to where I am now, where I am making the money I want and living the kind of life that I want.

Having a coach is a necessity for any entrepreneur. It is a financial sacrifice that pays off once you are committed to put in the work and open yourself to the possibilities of bigger and better for yourself. It is one of the best investments you can make into your business. Hiring a coach was the first thing I did when I started this particular journey and now I am on my 3rd coach because I recognise and understand that every time I am physically, mentally and emotionally ready to take my business to the next level, I want the support of another fabulous entrepreneur who has already taken these steps, walked along this path and who understands my own hesitation and is not afraid to call me out on any b.s that is holding me back.

My coach allows me to be me while exploring an even better me as I evolve. Hiring a coach changed my life and my business. I am not saying this to even convince you to hire me as a coach (which by the way is a fabulous idea!!) but because I want you all reading this to understand that hiring a coach is not a luxury. It should not be a second thought. It should be instinctive as hiring a graphic artist or web designer. Hiring a coach will set you and your business apart and will help you elevate at a much faster pace than if you were doing it alone.

It is in giving that we receive

How many of us have heard those words before? And of course e do not give only to receive but we also understand that in the broader sense of when we give blessings, blessings come back to you.

When most entrepreneurs start business it is with one key thing in mind- to be independent, create a life and business they love and in many instances create financial independence. And while we may get sucked into the everyday race of building a sustainable business, it is important for us to remember to give back to those who are less fortunate than we are.

Why?

Because it is the right thing to do. Because it takes a village to raise a child. Because we are our brothers keeper. The reasons go on and on.

But how many small business persons can truly say they help? And not just focus on the making the next dollar? In 2016, 3 businesses came together with a shared goal of making a bigger impact on their community for 2017.

Marketing Dynamics Business Solutions, a business consultancy firm owned by business coach Adanna Austin; Rewa Style, a fashion design house by Patrice Remy- Aubin and FenceLine Solutions Ltd, a marketing and solutions firm  by Gervon Abraham, decided to work together on New Years morning to deliver a hearty breakfast to the children of Amica House Children’s Homeamica-house

The children were grateful and showed their appreciation for the meal by singing 2 songs to us before and after the meal and the lovely young ladies and babies made us all feel very welcome.

Amica House is home to children aged two to eighteen and is open to receiving donations of books, materials, food supplies and volunteers to upkeep the running of the home and enable each of the children to receive the best of care. It is guided by Sister Jude Marie Aird.

As a business owner, one of the first things I have learnt in business is that we must continually give value and enrich others lives. Not focus on the money but focus instead on how to make this world a better place for each of us to live. Whether it is helping children, adults or animals, a giving heart and spirit goes a long way in leaving a last impression on this earth.

It is in giving that we receive is truly a testament to the way I live as a business coach. The more I have given in my time, expertise, sweat and tears and manpower, the more I have received in kind and have been so grateful for. Because the more I receive, the more I have been able to give even more. It is a cycle.

As we get busy into 2017, I encourage each of you reading this to consider how you can give back to your community or your country. As a business owner, how can you leave a lasting impact on the next person. And if you are interested in helping me out monthly at Amica House Children’s Home, then just give me a shout out in the comments below and I will contact you about the things we need.

The client connection

As an online business coach, the majority of my interaction with my clients are online. We talk everyday online via whatsapp, private messages, email and in my facebook group. But every once in a while, I choose to get out from behind my computer and go out and meet them in person. Why?

Because it helps me to understand them a bit better. Having that face to face interaction is just as important and in some cases even more so. Every moth I try to host at least 1 programme which allows me to talk to them face to face. Because I love to see how animated they get. The changes in their facial expressions. How hyped they get when talking about the vision for their business. Sitting with them 1 on 1 allows me to feed off of their energy as they are working hard to build their own empires.

Being an introvert by nature means that after 1 day of doing this I am usually zapped out. But the benefits it has given me is that after every session, I get a greater understanding of their challenges and their needs. It allows me to go back to my home office and create something even more dynamic for help them grow sustainable businesses.

As business owners, we all have to remember that our clients are our success. Getting to know and speak to your clients first hand makes a big difference in your business growth. Understanding what makes them tick, what drives and motivates them and what is keeping them back from buying from you are important triggers in your drive to develop your own business.

September and  October I hosted 1 day workshops and at both of these events I was able to meet some of the great entrepreneurs in my group. It was an awesome experience and it opened my eyes to quite a few things like sometimes my clients need to talk to me face to face because they share more when we do. I have learnt that the support they need goes even deeper and I am working to create a new programme that will deal with that extra support. But I also learned something about myself. Something I always knew but it was solidified in my last 2 workshops— that I love what I do. Because I believe and I know that my success comes from their success and I want them all to succeed and I love being able to help them reach that place of success.

We have to pay closer attention to our clients and not just view them as dollars and cents but as maybe the most important key to our success. Without them, who would buy our products and services?

That’s why on December 3rd from 9am to 3pm, I am hosting my December to Remember Bootcamp (Trinidad). Not just to help my clients get from A to B, but to connect, share and understand them better. The bootcamp will focus
